Pyrotechnic futuristic disaster action mongo-adventure about aliens attacking Earth and humans giving them the big boot. When mountain-sized flying saucers open fire on the world's cities, a ragtag band of colorful characters sets out to bring the alien critters to their pseudopodic knees. Borrowing liberally from science fiction classics like "War of the Worlds" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still," and a host of disaster movies from "Towering Inferno" to "Meteor," ID4 maintains a mindless mission to entertain with dazzling special effects and unabashed feel-good charm.
ID4 is one of the most thrilling science fiction adventures ever put on film. Sure the computer virus thing was far fetched, the aliens could have used some sort of leader and some ground fighting would have been cool, but still ID4 is a lot of fun anyway. Bill Pullman does a very good job as the President. Although he had some corny lines, I think he made the best of it. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid are good in their roles, too. Plus the invasion scenes are very well done; the White House blowing up was very believable.

DVD REVIEW ()

The video transfer is perfect and there are a lot of cool extra features. You can watch the alternate ending, but not without Roland Emmerich talking through it, unfortunately. Still, it is pretty cool. On disk one you can choose between the Theatrical Version or the Special Edition with nine minutes of restored footage. There are a lot of other cool features. Fox has been putting together some cool DVDs. Both ID4 and The Abyss are very cool DVDs; the menu screens for both of them are awesome. Keep up the good work, Fox. If only other companies would release DVDs like these.
